I have spent a large amount of time recently pondering goodness, as one of the fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23.
In the movie (& book) the Shack, the main character Mac encounters Wisdom, and learns that goodness is not anchored in our view of it, but in God’s character.
Goodness doesn’t change based upon what we think is good, as Mac discovered. It’s actually what God deems as good that is good.
“We are fixed on this one thing to know Your goodness and see Your glory…”
When we encounter God, we come face to face with His glorious Presence, and come to know just how good He is. God alone has no evil within Him, and so He alone is able to discern goodness.
Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever. Psalm 107:1
And not only is He good, He shows us all just how good He is!
The LORD is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made. Psalm 145:9
“We’re transformed by this one thing to know Your presence and see Your beauty….”
Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him. Psalm 34:8
When we accept Him for who He is, good, we are invited to allow His goodness to cover us. We become good in His sight because Jesus’ loving act on the cross made us good!
As we allow His Spirit to make His home within us, we make more room for His goodness, and become more fruit-full followers.
Mac met God in the shack where evil had tragically darkened His world. As He allowed God to heal him, Mac was able to see God’s goodness and how He had been with him all of his days. He left that shack a very changed man, changed by the goodness of the God who loves him so, and who couldn’t wait to express His love to this hurting man.
May we too meet God, encounter His goodness, and be changed by His glory!
